Which mindset do you need in consulting?

Okay so a lot of People are talking about making personal rules when starting in consulting. Like ,,make it clear that you don’t work at 3am in the night when somebody wants something from you.“ Or like ,,set it clear that people don’t push you around“. Which points can you recommend to do and which are for you personally the most important ones?

For me it was always about duration and quality of work.

Duration: I was happy to work at any time and any day - except for my holidays (at least at the end of my consulting times ;)). I made clear during my last holidays that I will not take my work laptop with me, something I didn't to during my first couple of holidays when I joined consulting..

Quality: I kept repeating what kind of projects I find interesting and intellectually stimulating in order to avoid to be staffed on mindless dd projects where I have to call clients from morning until evening to ask them market research questions 😉
