Everyone says to surround yourself with good people. But how do you do that?

Hi Andy,

That is a great question!

Surrounding yourself with positive people can be one of the most challenging things to do, in these times. And to overcome these challenges, you have to get out of your comfort zone and strive to meet good people and make relationships. There are n-number of ways to surround yourself with good people but there are 3 rules that I follow to surround myself with good people:

1. Stay away from people who belittle your goals and ambitions. Never let anyone tell your goals are too big or you cannot achieve them. There will always be people around you who will help you with your ambitions and goals, people who will enjoy being with you, people who actually and genuinely lift you higher, people who drift you in the direction of your ambition.

2. Surround yourself with people outside your comfort zone. To interact and make relationships with these people you need to step out of your comfort zone. Ambitious people read books, attend seminars and workshops, never crib and focus on making a better future for themselves.

3. Assess the behavior of the people around you and how they make you feel. If they're constantly looking down you and talking to you in a condescending tone, cut them off. On the other hand, people who always add something constructive to what you or do, surround yourself with them and never let them go.

To surround yourself with good people, use your intuition. Talk to people about what you do, what you love, what your goals and ambitions are, you'll automatically get a 'feeling' whether you want to be around them or not. That's your gut instinct telling you to make a decision.

Well, obviously there's no definitive answer to this question and pardon if any of the things I mentioned above do not appeal to you but this is just what I follow to make decision whether I want to be around certain kind of people or not.

Hope this helps!

Hey Andy,

That's a great question.

Honestly keep it simple. It is always safe to associate with people professionally, other way of saying this is to not give an opportunity for others to show their bad side. People's behaviours are attuned to the current work they are doing, their behaviours and the "baggage" they are carrying around. So it is better to live and let live.

Just believe that all the people you meet in your life are there for a reason. Take cognisance of this and don't think too much.

Cheers !

Andy, there are some great replies here already. So I won't repeat. Instead I'll tell you something most people don't realise - good is a subjective term. It depends on your life situation and where you want to get to. If you're say thinking of working in consulting, people good for you would be other similar minded people and people who work or have worked in consulting before. However, if you're training to be a yoga therapist, you probably need to surround yourself with yoga masters and gurus. Your goal decides who and what is good for you. There is no absolute good or bad (other than violence and murder) in my opinion.
